Amazon Boosts AI and Cloud Power with New Virginia Data Center Acquisition

Amazon Data Services, the cloud infrastructure division of tech giant Amazon, announced its acquisition of a George Washington University campus in Virginia for $427 million. This deal allows Amazon to develop a data center or an advanced IT facility on the site located in Ashburn, one of the most prominent server hosting hubs in the United States. The agreement also permits the university to continue some of its academic programs on the campus for up to five years. This move is part of a broad expansion strategy Amazon announced in 2023, which includes an additional $35 billion investment by 2040 in Virginia. This follows approximately $35 billion the company has already poured into developing its cloud infrastructure in the state over the past decade. Virginia, especially the northern part of the state, is the largest concentration of data centers globally, making it a vital hub for operating cloud computing services and processing artificial intelligence data, especially with the company's rapid expansion in this critical sector.
