YouTube Launches 'Kids Accounts' in Egypt for a Safer, Parent-Controlled Experience

YouTube recently rolled out its 'Kids Accounts' feature in Egypt and several other Arab countries. This move aims to give parents more control over the content their children watch and provide a safer experience within the main YouTube app, so there's no need for a separate app. This cool new feature lets kids explore age-appropriate content through dedicated accounts managed by their parents. Families can customize the viewing experience to fit their specific needs, and there are advanced parental control tools to manage content, screen time, and privacy settings. The service works by creating special accounts for children under parental supervision. Parents can pause the account or switch it to the full YouTube experience anytime they feel their child is ready for it. YouTube offers three levels for choosing the type of content children can access. These include: Explore: This level features educational content, how-to guides, arts, and crafts. There's also an 'Explore More' option that adds gaming and live streams alongside educational content. Most of YouTube: This option allows access to most videos available on the platform. Excluding content for those over 18 or content unsuitable for supervised accounts. The service also includes a set of parental control tools. A standout feature is the ability to set a daily limit for watching YouTube Shorts using a dedicated timer. Parents can even set it to zero to completely disable short-form videos, which can be super helpful during exam periods or when families want to reduce screen time. Plus, parents can easily manage account settings with simple controls. Kids Accounts come with several built-in protections that are activated by default for all users under 18. These include reminders to take a break from watching, bedtime alerts, disabling content creation and comments, turning off personalized ads, and disabling autoplay for videos by default. The launch of Kids Accounts builds on YouTube's existing supervised accounts service for teens, which is already available in the region. This service allows teens to access most of YouTube's content while giving parents the ability to monitor account activity by linking it to their own accounts and receiving regular notifications about platform usage. Javid Aslanov, YouTube's Head of MENA, shared that the platform has become a daily part of families' lives in the region, whether for learning or entertainment. He emphasized the company's continued investment in developing tools that prioritize children's safety. Garth Graham, YouTube's Head of Health, explained that the goal is to protect children and young people while they use the internet, not to prevent them from benefiting from it. He noted that supervised accounts offer a safer environment that combines learning and exploration, while providing families with the necessary tools to manage the user experience. Launching 'Kids Accounts' is part of YouTube's broader strategy to enhance the safety of young users. This strategy also includes the YouTube Kids app, designed for younger children, and the Google Family Link app, which provides tools for managing device usage, controlling apps, filtering content, and tracking children's Android devices.
