The rapid developments in the cybersecurity landscape are pushing telecom companies to adopt new verification tools that go beyond traditional methods. This helps reduce fraud risks and improves the user experience. In this context, Vodafone has started the global rollout of its 'Number Verify 2.0' service. This service relies on the mobile network to verify user identities, offering a more secure alternative to traditional text message (OTP) verification. The service has launched in Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, marking these as the first markets in a global expansion plan. It provides businesses with an advanced way to verify user identities directly through the mobile network, whether users are connected via mobile data or Wi-Fi. Once a user gives consent, the service allows them to instantly and securely share their phone number with the service provider, such as banks or e-commerce platforms. The system then automatically verifies that the number is linked to the SIM card and the device being used, all without needing to enter a verification code or wait for a text message to arrive.
Key Challenges of Traditional Verification
Vodafone emphasized that the new service aims to address one of the biggest weaknesses in the digital identity system. Phone numbers are still the most common way to create accounts, log in, recover accounts, and confirm transactions. However, text message verification methods are becoming less effective against modern electronic fraud techniques. The company explained that relying on text message verification codes doesn't prove the actual owner of the number; it only confirms that the code sent to the phone was entered. This leaves organizations and customers vulnerable to phishing and social engineering attacks, as well as Artificially Inflated Traffic (AIT) attacks. AIT attacks involve creating massive requests to send verification messages, which leads to increased costs and complicates authentication processes. Johanna Wood, Vodafone's Head of Network APIs, stated that text message verification has been the default method for over a decade, but it wasn't designed to keep up with current cyber threats. She noted that 'Number Verify 2.0' gives developers a faster and more secure way to verify phone numbers, while also providing a smoother user experience. She added that launching the service simultaneously in three countries marks the beginning of a global expansion plan, aiming to make it available to the company's enterprise customers in various markets.Benefits for Businesses and Users
