US company Starcloud has successfully raised $170 million in a Series A funding round, bringing its market valuation to $1.1 billion. This move highlights the growing global interest and investment in space computing technologies. With this latest funding, the total capital raised by the company since its inception now stands at approximately $200 million. This will fuel its ambitious plans to develop data centers operating in Earth's orbit, offering a future alternative to traditional ground-based centers that face increasing challenges related to energy and infrastructure. Starcloud had already launched its first satellite equipped with an Nvidia H100 processing unit in 2025, as part of an experiment to prove the feasibility of running artificial intelligence technologies beyond Earth. Today, the company is working on developing a new generation of satellites with even higher capabilities, powered by advanced Nvidia chips, alongside cloud servers and sophisticated processing systems. This paves the way for integrated space data centers, which are planned for launch via SpaceX's Starship rocket. This approach could potentially reduce operational costs in the future if reusable launch technologies achieve a stable commercial launch cadence. Despite these grand ambitions, space computing still faces complex technical challenges. Key among these are the high costs of launching, the difficulty of cooling processors in space, and the need for advanced communication technologies to efficiently connect orbital systems. In its initial phase, Starcloud plans to offer computing services for satellites. Later, it aims to expand into creating massive data centers capable of executing advanced tasks as launch costs decrease over time. With this direction, Starcloud enters a growing race with major companies, notably SpaceX and its Starlink network. This reflects a rising global trend towards utilizing space as a new environment for data processing and running AI technologies, opening vast horizons for transforming traditional computing into a fully integrated digital space beyond Earth.
