Roblox Rolls Out Face Scans for Age Verification to Boost Child Safety and Improve Online Interactions

Roblox, the popular gaming platform, has announced it's rolling out a facial verification system for its users. This big step comes after a wave of lawsuits in the United States raised concerns about the safety of minors online, and it aims to protect children from digital risks. So far, about 45% of daily active users have already gone through this age verification process. Here's how the system works: users open the app, allow camera access for the scan, and then they can enter age-categorized chats. This means users can only communicate with others within specific age groups: under 9 years old, 9-12, 13-15, 16-17, 18-20, and 21 years and older. If someone disagrees with their verification results, they can appeal and re-verify using an official ID or parental control tools. Data shows that 35% of users are under 13, 38% are between 13 and 17, and 27% are over 18. Despite these new measures, some loopholes have popped up, like verified accounts being sold on external platforms. This could potentially allow digital predators to exploit the system. Roblox also relies on continuous background verification systems. These include analyzing games, conversations, writing styles, and emojis to spot any behavior that doesn't match the registered age. On another note, the 18+ adult category has seen impressive growth, increasing by over 50% and generating about 40% higher revenue compared to younger age groups. This has prompted the platform to develop more suitable game content for this older demographic. Roblox has reaffirmed its commitment to continuously enhancing safety measures. They aim to keep up with evolving digital risks and user needs, all while focusing on creating a safe environment for players of all ages.
