OpenAI Secures $122 Billion in New Funding, Reaching $852 Billion Valuation

OpenAI announced yesterday, Tuesday, that its market value has reached an impressive $852 billion following a recent funding round that raised $122 billion. This huge amount went beyond initial expectations, reflecting the significant rise in computing costs. This comes amidst ongoing questions about whether OpenAI and other AI companies can generate enough revenue to cover their expenses. OpenAI stated in a blog post that "the capital currently invested contributes to building the AI infrastructure itself." They added, "Over time, this value will return to the economy, businesses, communities, and increasingly, to individuals." The company behind ChatGPT also noted that its monthly revenue run rate of $2 billion is growing rapidly. The funding round included a diverse group of partners, such as Amazon, Microsoft, Nvidia, and SoftBank, according to OpenAI. In an unusual move, reports indicated that about $3 billion was raised from individual investors. ChatGPT leads the way in consumer AI applications, boasting over 900 million active weekly users and around 50 million subscribers. The company also reported that the use of ChatGPT's online search engine has tripled in just one year. The San Francisco-based startup shared in its post, "These aren't just growth achievements; they show that advanced AI is becoming a part of people's daily lives around the world." Last February, the company started showing ads to its non-premium subscribers to boost its revenue. OpenAI also announced the development of an application that combines ChatGPT with internet browsing, the Codex programming tool, and smart capabilities that allow digital assistants to perform tasks independently. This massive funding comes amid expectations that OpenAI plans to go public this year, as competition in the AI sector intensifies. Anthropic, a fierce competitor founded by former OpenAI employees, continues to gain momentum and make headlines with its outstanding Claude AI models. Anthropic raised $30 billion in a funding round earlier this year. Google's Gemini AI model has also emerged as another strong competitor, and Elon Musk's xAI model has attracted investments and users.
