Mounir Nakhla: From Informal Economy to Billion-Dollar FinTech Powerhouse

Mounir Nakhla is a true standout among entrepreneurs in Egypt and the wider region's FinTech scene. He's successfully built an innovative business model focused on bringing digital financial services to people who don't typically use banks, all thanks to technological advancements and the widespread use of smartphones. Today, Nakhla is the Founder and CEO of MNT-Halan, a company that's become one of the leading FinTech players across the Middle East and Africa. Mounir Nakhla's professional journey kicked off in investment and development. He worked at an investment firm that focused on development projects in emerging markets, which gave him an early understanding of the needs of those with limited access to financial services. In 2009, he helped launch Mashroey, a project that offered financing for tuk-tuks and motorcycles, specifically targeting workers in the informal economy. This experience was a pivotal moment, sparking his idea to broaden financial services for the unbanked. As his interest in microfinance grew, Nakhla founded Tas'heel for Microfinance in 2015. This company focused on supporting small and micro-enterprises by providing funding to groups who found it hard to get loans from traditional banks. This experience really solidified his expertise in the non-banking finance market and paved the way for him to develop a more comprehensive digital model for financial services.
