Ahmed Rustom, Egypt's Minister of Planning and Economic Development, highlighted that entrepreneurship has become a major engine for economic growth and job creation. This is especially true as the global economy shifts towards innovation and knowledge-based industries. He explained that the Egyptian government is actively building a supportive environment for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). They're doing this by making it easier to get funding, offering investment incentives, and encouraging innovation. This approach helps transform budding ideas into competitive economic entities that boost the national output. Rustom also pointed out that the current phase demands greater collaboration between state institutions and the private sector to bolster the entrepreneurship ecosystem. He stressed that current economic challenges make it essential to unite efforts to ensure sustainable growth and create new, innovation-driven job opportunities. These statements came during a meeting between the Minister and Basil Rahmy, CEO of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (MSMEDA). The two discussed a comprehensive roadmap to support startups and overcome the regulatory and financial hurdles that entrepreneurs often face. Rustom reaffirmed that the SME sector is a fundamental pillar of the Egyptian economy. He emphasized its vital role in creating jobs, stimulating innovation, and enhancing market stability, underscoring the importance of continuous support for this sector to tackle challenges and achieve sustainable development. He also noted that geopolitical developments and regional instability are putting pressure on the economy. This pushes the state to adopt a more flexible development vision, focusing on strategic sectors like energy and food security, which are crucial for achieving economic and social stability. Ahmed Rustom stressed that the state aims to manage these challenges efficiently while strengthening the ability of SMEs to adapt and endure. This ensures a sustainable balance between the economic and social dimensions of growth. For his part, Basil Rahmy affirmed MSMEDA's commitment to deepening cooperation with the Ministry of Planning. The goal is to support Egypt's entrepreneurship environment and empower young people to launch their projects, whether through providing funding or technical and training support. He praised the Ministry's role in shaping economic policies and coordinating with various government bodies and the private sector. This helps direct investments towards a more diversified, innovation-based economy. Rahmy highlighted the importance of partnerships with financing institutions, especially the National Investment Bank and NI Capital. These partnerships aim to support venture capital funds and boost startup funding, making the Egyptian market more attractive as a regional hub for entrepreneurship. Rahmy revealed that MSMEDA continues its efforts to develop the startup ecosystem. This includes activating the "Startup Charter," launched under the patronage of Mostafa Madbouly, and working on a comprehensive strategy for 2026–2030 in collaboration with the National Planning Institute. He emphasized the importance of unifying the national vision to support small projects and entrepreneurship. This involves coordinating efforts among different entities and fostering a more competitive environment that supports innovation and provides sustainable job opportunities in the Egyptian economy.
