A new study from UK-based Juniper Research, a global technology strategy firm, reveals that e-commerce fraud losses are expected to soar from $56 billion in 2025 to over $131 billion by 2030. This marks a staggering 133% increase during that period, largely driven by a sharp rise in what's known as "friendly fraud."
The study clarified that this growth isn't primarily linked to traditional hacking crimes. Instead, it's due to an increase in fraudulent disputes over legitimate transactions made by actual consumers, where payments are challenged without valid reason, often without prior communication with merchants.
Shane O'Sullivan, a research analyst at Juniper Research, stated that the fastest-growing types of e-commerce fraud "don't come from criminals hacking systems, but from bad actors integrated within the system." He noted that a significant number of consumers file direct dispute requests due to misunderstanding promotions or misusing refund mechanisms and chargeback processes, which inflates losses for merchants.
Fraud Prevention Technologies
The study highlighted that friendly fraud heavily impacts merchants' profit margins, especially with the rising processing fees associated with refunds. This pushes companies to accelerate their investments in fraud prevention technologies. The report emphasized that North America is disproportionately affected by this phenomenon, expecting it to account for over 70% of total global spending on e-commerce fraud prevention solutions by 2030.
The report stressed that fraud prevention solution providers must reposition their systems as essential infrastructure to protect profit margins. This allows merchants to contain costs before they escalate with growing transaction volumes. In this context, solution developers are moving towards building AI-powered platforms, shifting the fraud combat system from a reactive approach to a proactive model, alongside the expansion of digital identity regulatory frameworks and stricter compliance requirements.
O'Sullivan concluded by noting that this ongoing shift requires solution providers to focus on continuous identity signals linked to specific accounts and individuals, emphasizing that innovation and accuracy will be crucial competitive factors in an increasingly complex market.
