Hisham Safwat is a prominent name in Egypt's e-commerce sector. He skillfully combined his engineering background with a strong management vision to build a career path that stretched from traditional retail to leading one of the region's largest digital commerce platforms, Jumia Egypt.
From Engineering to Management
Safwat began his academic journey by earning a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Power Engineering from Ain Shams University's Faculty of Engineering in 2000. This gave him a solid analytical and systematic foundation for thinking and problem-solving.
Later, he furthered his education with a Master's degree in Information Technology Management from Middlesex University in London. This allowed him to blend technical and managerial understanding, which later reflected in his ability to lead digital transformation within the organizations he worked for.
From Traditional Retail to Regional Expertise
Hisham Safwat started his professional career with CompuMe in 2001, one of Egypt's first specialized electronics retail chains. Over more than a decade, he advanced within the company, taking on senior responsibilities in developing internal display systems and managing partner relationships, contributing to the company's expansion and increased market share.
Later, he moved to the United Arab Emirates, where he worked in retail operations consulting. This experience allowed him to gain broader expertise in regional markets and various business models within the retail sector.
Leading Transformation at Jumia Egypt
His time at Jumia marked the most significant turning point in his career. He joined the company in 2012 as Chief Commercial Officer, at a time when e-commerce in Egypt was still in its early stages.
By 2014, he became the CEO of Jumia Egypt, leading a pivotal expansion phase for the company. This included developing commercial operations and boosting growth in the local market. In 2016, he also helped secure funding rounds exceeding $300 million, which enabled the company's regional expansion and strengthened its operational infrastructure.
Lasting Impact on the Egyptian Market
Hisham Safwat's name is associated with several important transformations in the e-commerce market. Most notably, he helped build Egyptian consumers' trust in online shopping and transformed Jumia from a platform specializing in electronics into a comprehensive online marketplace covering various product categories.
He also played a role in establishing the concept of major discount seasons in the local market, especially “Black Friday” campaigns, which later became some of Egypt's most important annual shopping events.
Expanding Electronic Payment Solutions
As part of the digital transformation, he supported the expansion of electronic payment solutions through platforms like JumiaPay. This helped reduce reliance on cash-on-delivery, aligning with national trends towards financial inclusion.
He also focused on supporting local products by opening up opportunities for Egyptian manufacturers and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to showcase their products on the platform, thereby boosting the presence of “Made in Egypt” within a growing digital market.
Entrepreneurship
Beyond his executive career, Hisham Safwat regularly participates in entrepreneurship conferences like RiseUp and EEA events. He shares his expertise as a mentor for several startups, especially in logistics, retail, and fintech.
His management philosophy is based on the principles of “sustainable growth” and “investing in human capital,” as he believes that the human element remains the primary driver of any successful technological transformation.
