Dr. Ragab Mahrous, an advisor to the head of the Egyptian Tax Authority, has revealed the details of the new Simplified Tax Procedures Law. This law aims to support startups and entrepreneurs, making it easier to bring the informal economy into the official system. This move is expected to boost voluntary compliance and encourage overall economic growth. Mahrous explained during the Financial Technology and Funding Conference that this law applies to businesses with annual revenues less than 20 million EGP. The tax rate for these businesses will be quite low, ranging between 0.5% and 1%. The law also requires businesses to use e-invoices when dealing with registered sellers or e-receipts when providing services to final consumers, which is a great step towards embracing the digital transformation in the market. This new law offers several fantastic benefits for startups and entrepreneurs. These include exemptions from certain deductions and contract notarization fees. Plus, there are exemptions on capital gains taxes that come from selling machinery and equipment. This is all part of the government's big push to simplify tax procedures, increase transparency, and encourage businesses to comply voluntarily in the local market. Mahrous also mentioned that taxpayers will now submit a tax declaration every three months, which means four declarations annually for Value Added Tax (VAT). He stressed that this new system is super easy and straightforward, perfectly aligned with automated procedures and the ongoing digital transformation. It will also continue to apply to the large taxpayer centers in categories one and two. Finally, Mahrous confirmed that the law is perfectly suited for e-commerce activities. It even allows businesses to open a tax file using just their national ID number, completely cutting out the need to deal with the complexities of the old, traditional system. This truly shows the Tax Authority's vision to create a friendlier investment environment for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and entrepreneurs, and to support the digital economy in a big way.
