With the deadline for adopting ISO 20022 payment standards for cross-border transactions fast approaching, financial institutions are racing to upgrade their systems. They want to make sure they meet these new requirements, and guess what? Artificial intelligence is emerging as a super important tool to tackle challenges related to data quality and boost the efficiency of banking operations. In exciting news, Birchford Technologies, a company specializing in modernizing payment systems and integrating SWIFT services across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, has announced the launch of its brand-new ProLink AI Translator platform. This platform is designed to help banks and financial institutions speed up their shift to the ISO 20022 standard and make digital payments even better. The platform uses an advanced AI model developed by SWIFT specifically for processing postal addresses, combined with a reference data engine created by Birchford Technologies. This makes it the first platform of its kind in the MENA region to use such an integrated approach to process payment data according to the new regulatory demands. This launch is part of Birchford Technologies' strategy to help financial institutions prepare for the upcoming change. Starting November 14, 2026, unstructured postal addresses will no longer be accepted in cross-border payment messages. From that date, only fully structured or hybrid address formats will be allowed, as per SWIFT community requirements. ProLink AI Translator cleverly combines SWIFT's Natural Language Processing (NLP) model with a smart reference intelligence layer developed by Birchford Technologies. This allows it to convert unstructured addresses into data that fully complies with ISO 20022, making sure that creditor and debtor data in pacs.008 and pacs.009 payment messages is perfectly structured. What's more, the platform helps reduce the number of rejected payment messages caused by unstructured data. It also cleans up old databases and corporate payment files. A fantastic feature is that the entire system can run within a bank's own infrastructure without needing any external connections. This significantly boosts information security and privacy, increases Straight Through Processing (STP) rates, and cuts down on manual interventions in operations. The platform also supports the Central Bank of Egypt's efforts to transition to ISO 20022. It offers a practical way for banks to adopt the standard without needing expensive, radical changes to their core systems. This will help speed up the standard's implementation across the banking sector, improve payment data quality, support the development of the Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) system, and enhance interoperability with regional and global payment networks. Its role extends to integrating with e-commerce platforms, payment gateways, digital collection systems, and corporate payment centers. This integration improves digital payment management, reduces issues with cross-border payments, boosts the efficiency of fraud detection systems, and refines compliance data for Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements. All of this happens while supporting the growth of the digital economy in Egypt and the Gulf countries. The company explained that the launch of ProLink AI Translator was a collaborative effort with several banking institutions in the region, including Suez Canal Bank, Housing and Development Bank, and Gulf French Bank in Dubai. This shows a growing demand for smart compliance solutions that help banks manage the shift to structured data more efficiently. Islam Aziz, Technical Services Manager at Birchford Technologies, shared that the platform is a strategic step in modernizing the region's payment infrastructure. By using AI, it provides practical solutions that help financial institutions comply with ISO 20022 more efficiently and at a lower operational cost, all while improving data quality and boosting banking operations. He added that the platform fundamentally tackles the challenges of unstructured addresses, transforming them into immediately usable data within secure operating environments. This significantly enhances banks' readiness for the next phase of digital payment development. Aziz also noted that ProLink AI Translator will support efforts to develop payment systems in GCC countries and the MENA region, including networks like UAE-FTS, PAPSS, and SWIFTNet. It will empower banks to comply with global standards while maintaining and improving the efficiency of their local infrastructure. He further explained that the platform integrates seamlessly with the existing ProLink ecosystem. This includes services like payment tracking via SWIFT GPI, automatic global confirmations, multi-network payment automation, real-time transaction and settlement dashboards, and a Workflow management system. Plus, it integrates with banking and institutional systems, making it a comprehensive platform for managing digital payment operations. Observers believe that the shift to ISO 20022 is no longer just about updating technical formats for bank messages. It has become a crucial step to improve data quality, boost payment efficiency, and enhance interoperability between global financial systems. This is why tech solution providers are developing AI-powered tools to make this transition easier and more cost-effective for financial institutions.
