US Government Orders Anthropic to Block Foreign Access to Advanced AI Models Over Security Fears

Anthropic announced it would suddenly shut down its most advanced AI models for all users. This decision came after the US government issued directives to suspend foreign nationals' access to these models, citing national security concerns. The company stated in a press release that it received a directive related to export controls, requiring it to suspend foreign nationals' access to its 'Fable 5' and 'Mythos 5' models. The directive, however, did not include specific details about the nature of the security concerns. Anthropic clarified, based on its understanding of the directives, that the US government believes there's a way to bypass or 'jailbreak' the security system that prevents the 'Fable 5' model from being used to identify software vulnerabilities. This follows a previous dispute between officials from the Trump administration and Anthropic, which is currently preparing for its initial public offering (IPO). The relationship between the two parties had been tense recently.
