A New Era for Egyptian Startups: MSMEDA CEO Welcomes 'Startup Egypt' Launch

Basil Rahmy, CEO of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (MSMEDA), recently joined the celebration announcing the establishment of the Egyptian Association for Startups and Entrepreneurship, known as "Startup Egypt." This new association is a really important addition to Egypt's thriving entrepreneurship and innovation scene. In his speech, Rahmy highlighted how Egyptian entrepreneurs have consistently shown their ability to build innovative companies over the past few years. These companies are not only competitive but also great at attracting investments and expanding both regionally and internationally. He pointed out that the many successes of Egyptian startups, both at home and abroad, truly prove that Egypt is full of exceptional talent that deserves all the support it can get. He also mentioned that MSMEDA makes supporting entrepreneurship and startups a top priority. They see this sector as a key engine for driving economic growth, creating new job opportunities, and making the economy more competitive. Rahmy explained that MSMEDA's main goal is to make the journey easier for entrepreneurs, helping them get access to the services and opportunities they need to grow and expand their businesses more quickly and effectively. Basil Rahmy further clarified that MSMEDA is always working to improve its tools and programs. They do this by collaborating with various players in the entrepreneurship ecosystem, because they strongly believe that successful entrepreneurship needs everyone to work together – that includes the government, the private sector, investors, and all sorts of organizations that support entrepreneurs (ESOs). He confirmed that MSMEDA has played a significant role over the past three years, especially through its membership in the Ministerial Group for Entrepreneurship. They helped create a single, clear definition for startups and also worked on setting the standards and rules for classifying these companies. Rahmy explained that the main reason for this definition is to clearly distinguish between innovative startups and newer companies that operate in more traditional fields. He highlighted that startups have very different needs, both financially and otherwise, compared to these newly established traditional businesses. He added that both types of businesses are incredibly important for the Egyptian economy, and MSMEDA is committed to supporting them through the various programs it offers. Rahmy also mentioned that MSMEDA teamed up with the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development to help prepare the National Executive Framework for Supporting Entrepreneurship and Innovation. The goal here is to create a practical way to implement the National Charter for Startups, which will really help Egyptian startups and make the business environment even more supportive of innovation. He further shared that MSMEDA has already supported over 209 startups, helping them take advantage of the laws and incentives designed to boost their businesses in Egypt. This is all part of their ongoing commitment to empowering this vital sector and creating more opportunities for its growth. The event itself saw a great turnout, with many ministers and officials who are deeply involved in Egypt's entrepreneurship and startup scene in attendance. The Egyptian Association for Startups and Entrepreneurship is super important because it acts as a central hub, bringing together top entrepreneurs, investors, and experts. This means it can help startups voice their needs more effectively, encourage meaningful conversations about the sector's future, and really boost collaboration among all the key players in Egypt's entrepreneurship ecosystem.
