Engineer Raafat Hendy, Egypt's Minister of Communications and Information Technology, recently met with Sang-Bo Kim, the World Bank Group's Vice President for Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence. They explored ways to boost their joint cooperation across several digital transformation initiatives. Key topics included empowering micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to participate more actively in the digital economy, fostering innovation in government technology, supporting responsible AI applications, and developing digital skills that meet current job market demands.
Minister Hendy emphasized that the World Bank Group's efforts to help countries build strong digital economies align perfectly with the goals of Egypt's "Digital Egypt" strategy. He highlighted that digital transformation is a core pillar for boosting economic development and making Egypt more competitive.
He further explained that the strategy focuses on improving digital services, creating new job opportunities, supporting business growth, and increasing the digital economy's contribution to overall growth rates. Looking ahead, the next phase aims to expand the delivery of digital government services, complete the development of an integrated public digital infrastructure, and broaden the adoption of modern technologies to achieve lasting economic and developmental impact.
Developing Digital Infrastructure
During their meeting, they also reviewed the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology's efforts to enhance digital infrastructure. This includes expanding fiber optic networks to cover villages and rural areas, which will improve the quality of communication and internet services, make digital government services more accessible, and open up new avenues for economic activity.
Boosting Skills and Digital Service Exports
The discussions also covered the Ministry's digital capacity-building programs and its initiatives to support freelancing. They also talked about growing the outsourcing industry and digital exports, all of which help strengthen Egypt's position as a regional hub for digital services and attract investments in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector.
