WhatsApp is getting ready to roll out an exciting new feature that will let users connect without needing to share their phone numbers. This will happen through unique usernames, a move aimed at boosting privacy within the app. The feature is set to launch gradually worldwide over the coming months, reaching about 3 billion users. The company explained that some users will be able to reserve their usernames starting this week. They also confirmed that using this feature will be optional, and you'll be able to change or delete your username anytime you like. So, how will this work? Once the feature is fully rolled out, WhatsApp users will be able to chat just by exchanging usernames, without having to reveal their phone numbers. Don't worry, the app will still provide tools to block and report unwanted messages, ensuring a safe user experience. There are also some rules for choosing your username. According to the company's announcement, usernames will be limited to a maximum of 35 characters. There will also be some restrictions to prevent other users from using the names of prominent public figures, officials, and celebrities, which helps prevent identity impersonation. For example, it won't be possible for users who don't own them to register usernames belonging to well-known public figures like Donald Trump. WhatsApp, which is owned by Meta, emphasized that the username feature is part of its ongoing efforts to boost user privacy and give them more control over their data.
