Visa Launches AI Financial Assistant to Revolutionize In-App Banking

The banking world is quickly embracing AI as financial institutions look to offer more personalized services. This push is driving global payment companies to develop solutions that go beyond just processing transactions, moving into digital financial consulting. In this exciting development, Visa has announced its new "Financial AI Assistant" service. This service aims to empower banks and financial institutions to easily add a smart assistant directly into their banking apps, providing tailored financial analysis to customers without needing complex software development. This new service offers an interactive, conversational experience that even carries the bank's own branding. This means customers can get personalized financial insights, understand their spending habits, and perform various banking services right from within the app. It's a big step towards boosting user experience and increasing digital engagement.

AI Boosts Personalized Banking Services

Visa believes that adopting AI is no longer optional for financial institutions. User behavior is changing rapidly, with more and more people relying on AI tools for information and financial advice. According to Visa's data, over 66% of Americans who use generative AI apps now turn to them for financial advice. Despite this, banks still hold a strong position as the most trusted entities for protecting customers' financial and personal data. Studies also show that about 85% of customers are willing to share more of their data with their banks if, in return, they receive valuable AI-powered services that offer a more personalized experience. Michelle Heron, Senior Vice President and Head of Value-Added Services for North America at Visa, shared that consumers are already using AI tools for financial advice. However, banking institutions have a competitive edge because they hold a complete picture of their customers' financial data. This allows them to turn that data into practical services and more accurate financial decisions right within banking apps. She added that the "Financial AI Assistant" service combines customer financial data analysis with the ability to perform banking actions directly during a conversation. This helps banks strengthen their relationships with customers and transform from just a platform for viewing transactions into a digital financial hub powered by generative AI technology.

Interactive Experience and In-App Service Execution

The service offers a wide range of features designed to simplify money management. It provides automatic monthly spending summaries that highlight key changes in a user's financial behavior without any prior setup. Users can also ask natural language questions about their financial transactions and get answers based on their actual account data. Customers can also perform several actions directly during a conversation, such as temporarily pausing a bank card or activating notifications and alerts. Visa is also working on adding new features in the future, including managing recurring subscriptions and linking them to spending analytics to provide a more comprehensive view of recurring expenses. Visa emphasized that this service is a new addition to its digital solutions platform for card-issuing institutions. It provides a unified interface within the banking app, allowing access to products, services, documents, and FAQs through a single chat window, making it easier and more efficient for customers to access services. Visa also noted that financial institutions can operate the service independently or integrate it with other digital services offered by Visa, such as digital card display, subscription management, and adding cards to digital wallets, all through a single integration process.

Data Governance and Security Are Top Priorities

Visa explained that the service operates within a comprehensive framework for AI governance and data management. This is done through a specialized platform that allows secure access to various AI models, which are continuously evaluated to ensure high levels of security, accuracy, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency. Furthermore, the service leverages Visa's global network infrastructure, which processes over 300 billion transactions annually. This allows it to utilize cardholder behavior data, real-time data, and financial institution data to provide highly personalized financial recommendations, all while maintaining security standards, fraud protection, and regulatory compliance. Visa added that banks will be able to fully customize the user interface to match their brand, as well as control registration settings, notifications, and actions that can be performed within the smart assistant. This ensures the service aligns with each financial institution's strategy and its customers' needs. Visa plans to begin a pilot phase for the "Financial AI Assistant" service with several financial institutions in the United States in August 2026, with a gradual rollout to global markets in subsequent stages.
