AI chip supply chains are facing a new challenge as legal disputes in the semiconductor sector heat up. There's growing concern about how potential restrictions could affect major companies that rely on these crucial components. In light of this, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) has officially launched an investigation into Samsung Electronics. The ITC's formal investigation into Samsung Electronics comes after accusations of patent infringement by the American company Netlist. This case could potentially impact the supply of memory chips used in AI servers within the United States. The investigation was triggered by a complaint from Netlist, which accused Samsung of using its patented technologies to produce DRAM memory chips without the necessary licenses. These chips are essential components that data centers depend on to power AI models and high-performance computing applications. Netlist has asked the ITC to issue orders that would block the import and sale of products containing the disputed chips in the U.S. If the case goes in Netlist's favor, this move could significantly affect the supply chain for key components in the AI industry. The Commission is expected to set the official timeline for the investigation within 45 days. After that, the case will be handed over to a judge who will hear arguments from both sides and examine the evidence. An initial decision will then be issued, which will later be reviewed by the full Commission. If Samsung is found guilty, the company could face a ban on importing some of its products into the American market, unless the decision is waived for reasons related to public interest or trade policy. This investigation comes at a time when the memory chip market is experiencing rapid growth, driven by the increasing demand for infrastructure needed to run AI applications. DRAM and HBM chips are vital components in the servers that major technology companies rely on. This isn't the first time these two companies have been at odds. Samsung and Netlist have been in a legal battle for years. Netlist previously won $303 million in damages in 2023, followed by another $118 million judgment in 2024, both related to patent infringement cases involving memory technologies. Analysts believe that any potential restrictions on Samsung's products could have ripple effects on companies that use its chips to power AI servers, including NVIDIA, Google, Broadcom, and Super Micro Computer. This could add more pressure to supply chains in one of the fastest-growing technology sectors. The markets are closely watching the investigation's outcome, given Samsung's position as one of the world's largest memory chip producers and the critical role these components play in the global race to develop AI infrastructure.
