Samsung is getting ready to stop supporting its Samsung Messages app. They've officially set July 6, 2026, as the date to discontinue the service, urging Galaxy phone users to switch to Google Messages. This move comes as Google Messages has become the default and supported messaging app on Samsung devices, aiming to boost the integration of Samsung's services with the Android system.
Official Notifications for Users Before Service Discontinuation
The company has started sending out in-app notifications within Samsung Messages to let users know the service will soon end. These notifications emphasize the need to switch to Google Messages to ensure uninterrupted sending and receiving of messages.
The notification states: "Samsung Messages will be discontinued in July 2026. Upgrade to Google Messages as your default messaging app today to maintain a seamless messaging experience on Android."
Samsung first revealed its plan to end support for the app last April, without setting a final date at the time. Later, they confirmed that July 6, 2026, would be the official date for the service to stop, and subsequently began notifying users who hadn't yet moved to the alternative app.
The Decision Includes All Galaxy Phones
This decision affects current Galaxy phone users, including those with the latest models like the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Google Messages has become the primary messaging app that Samsung recommends and supports by default on its devices.
Partnership with Google to Enhance Messaging Services
This shift is part of the ongoing collaboration between Samsung and Google to unify the messaging experience across Android devices. Over the past few years, both companies have adopted Google Messages as the main app on most new Galaxy phones.
This direction is based on supporting the Rich Communication Services (RCS) standard. RCS offers a range of modern features, including sending high-quality photos and videos, showing typing indicators, read receipts, and improved group chats, along with supporting encryption on compatible devices.
