Amidst growing interest in healthy nutrition and a move towards policies aimed at reducing sugar consumption, food industry companies are focusing on developing new products based on innovation, research, and development. This helps them keep up with expected market changes and meet consumer needs.
In line with this trend, Rich Bake, a company specializing in baked goods, confirmed that it's continuously expanding its portfolio of healthy products. They're doing this by producing baked goods with no added sugar and investing in developing food alternatives that align with these new directions. This effort comes as the government discusses issuing legislation aimed at reducing sugar consumption in food industries.
Engineer Gilbert Hobeika, the company's CEO, mentioned that legislation promoting public health acts as a strong incentive for companies to innovate. He pointed out that future competition will rely more on developing products with high nutritional value, rather than just focusing on prices.
He explained that the company's healthy product portfolio includes items like Rice Cakes, Baladi bread with bran and sourdough, Baladi bread with barley and sourdough, and healthy Tannour bread. This is all part of a strategy to expand within the healthy baked goods market.
Hobeika added that reducing sugar isn't just about replacing one ingredient. Sugar plays several technical roles, such as activating yeast, improving texture, volume, and color, and extending shelf life. This means companies need to redesign product formulas and choose alternatives that achieve the same results without compromising quality.
He also noted that Rich Bake is working on developing products that use natural sugar alternatives, like honey and fruit concentrates. They are also exploring the use of enzymes that help produce sugars from complex carbohydrates found in flour, alongside expanding their production of baked goods with no added sugar.
Hobeika confirmed that the company has already started producing several products that are completely free of added sugar. Meanwhile, the research and development team continues to innovate new formulations, collaborating with various technical and production departments to ensure a perfect balance of quality, taste, and nutritional value.
He further stated that new legislation could give companies with strong research and development capabilities a competitive advantage. It also opens the door for introducing innovative products targeting new consumer segments, especially with the increasing awareness of healthy nutrition.
The company's CEO anticipates that baked goods made from whole grains and products with no added sugar will see significant growth in the coming years. This is due to ongoing changes in consumer behavior and a rising demand for healthy food options.
Hobeika emphasized that Rich Bake relies on strict quality and efficiency standards when selecting raw materials, whether they are local or imported. He stressed that innovation will remain the key factor in boosting competitiveness, and that reducing sugar consumption is both an investment opportunity and a challenge for the food industry sector.
