OpenAI founder Sam Altman has ignited a wave of angry criticism on social media platforms following his statements at the BlackRock US Infrastructure Summit in Washington D.C. During the summit, Altman presented his vision for the future of artificial intelligence and the transformation of knowledge into a marketable financial commodity.

Controversial Statements

In a discussion with Adibayo Ogonlesi, an OpenAI board member and CEO of Global Infrastructure Partners, Altman stated:

"At the core of our business, and the business of all other model providers, will be selling digital tokens… You might spend tens of millions, maybe billions of dollars on these tokens to solve one truly valuable problem. We envision a future where knowledge becomes a basic commodity, like electricity or water, which people buy from us 'by the meter.'"

Altman's remarks did not go unnoticed. Many observers and the public found them controversial and "disgusting," as it seemed AI companies were prioritizing financial profit over the public good.

User and Analyst Reactions

Researcher Melissa Dykes sarcastically tweeted: "We stole all your knowledge and art, and now we're going to put a meter on it and sell it back to you. You're welcome!"

Journalist Tana Ganeva compared Altman's statements to the series Black Mirror, saying: "Nothing in 'Black Mirror' matches the bleakness of this man."

Users on Twitter described the idea as turning knowledge into a basic commodity that is measured and sold, which they considered unethical because it relates to the necessities of human learning and progress.

The Concept of "Digital Tokens"

Analysts explained that what Altman meant by "selling tokens" is a system for measuring the amount of work or knowledge provided by AI in each operation, whether it's text analysis, article writing, problem-solving, or image creation.

Each unit or digital token represents the amount of computational resources and effort required to complete the operation, including electrical power and servers, and a specific financial cost is imposed on it, just as electricity or water consumption is calculated on a home meter.

Ongoing Debate About the Future of AI

Altman's statements reflect the ongoing division regarding the future of AI: on one hand, providers of this technology seek to maximize financial gain from its capabilities; on the other hand, users and those concerned with digital ethics worry about turning knowledge into a commodity, which could create social and knowledge gaps and increase the public's feeling of inequality in accessing modern technology.

This debate opens a broader discussion about the ethical boundaries of selling knowledge and the role of AI companies in serving society, not just achieving financial profits.
