Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, revealed that the ChatGPT chatbot has returned to achieving monthly growth exceeding 10%. This shows the product is regaining its momentum after a period of increasing competitive pressure in the artificial intelligence market.
Altman explained in an internal message to company employees that OpenAI is preparing to launch an updated chatbot model in the coming days. While over 800 million people worldwide use ChatGPT weekly, competition has intensified as other AI companies, including Google and Anthropic, have advanced. Last December, OpenAI had declared a state of "maximum alert" to improve its core products and temporarily suspended several projects to focus on developing ChatGPT.
In the same context, Altman noted that the company's code-writing tool, "Codex," achieved approximately 50% growth compared to the previous week. This makes it a direct competitor to "Claude Code," developed by Anthropic, which has also seen increasing adoption by developers over the past year.
Anthropic is one of the prominent companies in AI software, with a wide segment of developers relying on its technologies for programming operations. It aims to expand its business scope through products like "Claude Cowork," designed to perform computer tasks for administrative employees.
Meanwhile, emerging AI companies, led by Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Anthropic, are intensifying their efforts to attract new users and increase their market share. Google's "Gemini" app surpassed 750 million monthly active users by the end of the last quarter of last year, reflecting the intensity of competition in this rapidly growing sector.
Last week, OpenAI launched a new programming model called "GPT-5.3-Codex." This move aims to enhance AI-powered programming tools and expand their uses among developers and companies.
The company also announced its intention to start displaying advertisements within ChatGPT for some users in the United States. This is part of a strategy to generate additional revenue to support the high costs associated with developing and operating advanced AI technologies.
This direction reflects OpenAI's pursuit of a balance between rapid expansion of its user base and ensuring sustainable funding, at a time when the AI sector is witnessing rapid transformations and unprecedented competition among major global companies.
