Mark Hamilton, NVIDIA's Vice President of Software Solutions Engineering, shared that in recent years, the UAE has shifted from just adopting AI applications to actually developing and building them. Data and computing have become a fundamental part of the national infrastructure, just like energy or telecommunications. He explained that the rise of what are called 'sovereign AI clouds' is a big step in this transformation. These platforms allow sensitive data, AI models, and inference processes to stay within the country's borders, while still using the latest accelerated computing technologies. Examples of these systems include the 'Aleria' platform, powered by NVIDIA, and the 'Oracle–NVIDIA' system in Abu Dhabi. Hamilton believes this setup gives the UAE greater control over its data, digital identity, and language models that are tied to the country's privacy and culture. It also supports the creation of 'AI factories' that can continuously produce knowledge and digital services for both government agencies and the private sector.
Energy and Infrastructure
Among the factors making the UAE so attractive in this field, Hamilton points to the availability of surplus low-cost energy, along with a stable electricity grid and related infrastructure. With AI applications and data centers consuming a lot of power, this becomes a crucial advantage when choosing locations for digital infrastructure development. Large data centers that run AI models need a lot of electricity to power advanced processing units and cooling systems. This makes countries that can provide stable, low-cost energy much more appealing for advanced technology investments. Speaking about expanding cooperation with the UAE, Hamilton mentioned that existing partnerships with local institutions cover several areas related to AI technology development. These range from building sovereign cloud infrastructure to advanced research in robotics and physical AI. These partnerships include working with Aleria to build sovereign AI infrastructure, as well as collaborating with the Technology Innovation Institute (TII) in Abu Dhabi to develop a joint lab specializing in AI and robotics technologies. These initiatives aim to develop advanced applications like digital twins and human-like robots. They also focus on training AI models that use local data and reflect the economic and societal priorities of the UAE.AI Factories
Hamilton explained that the concept of 'AI factories' is changing how we view computing infrastructure. Data centers are transforming from just technical facilities into productive hubs that can generate economic value. Instead of simply processing data, these factories turn data into knowledge products like predictive models, software code, digital images, and even advanced scientific applications. This opens the door to earning direct revenue from producing 'intelligence.' This model also allows startups to access advanced computing power without needing huge investments in infrastructure. This speeds up the development of digital products and shortens their time to market from years to just months. Accelerated computing technologies, which mainly rely on advanced Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), are playing an increasing role in transforming many economic sectors. This includes healthcare, where AI is used in drug discovery, medical image analysis, and developing surgical robots. Manufacturing also relies on autonomous robots and digital twins to improve production processes. Meanwhile, energy companies use AI technologies to better manage electricity grids and model climate changes. In the financial services sector, advanced computing helps speed up trading and risk analysis. Telecommunication networks are seeing big changes with the emergence of 'AI-RAN' technologies that make networks smarter. And smart cities are gradually moving towards operating systems that rely more on AI to manage services and infrastructure. Regarding the development of technology itself, Hamilton clarified that large AI models are starting to change how software and electronic chips are designed within NVIDIA. The company uses AI-powered tools to automate many engineering tasks, from writing code to analyzing errors and improving performance. Among the tools the company is developing is 'ChipNeMo,' a model specifically designed to support chip design processes and code analysis. This helps shorten development cycles and accelerate innovation in semiconductors. In this context, the company is also working on developing integrated computing platforms like the 'Vera Rubin' system. This system represents one of the future foundations for smart computing over the next decade, combining advanced hardware and software platforms into one system aimed at significantly reducing the operating costs of AI models.
