Egypt's Local Development Fund: Women Are Top Beneficiaries of EGP 22.4 Million in Small Business Loans

Dr. Manal Awad, the Minister of Local Development and Environment, recently received a report detailing the Local Development Fund's efforts. The report highlighted the fund's crucial role in financing small and micro-projects and boosting economic empowerment for vulnerable groups across various governorates.

The report, prepared by Dr. Saeed Helmy Abdel Khaleq, who heads the Integrated Planning and Local Development Sector and chairs the Fund's Board of Directors, showed impressive results. From July 2025 to March 2026, the fund financed 1,338 small and micro-projects in 17 governorates. This initiative successfully created 1,338 direct job opportunities, underscoring the fund's vital contribution to supporting local economies and development in towns and villages.

Looking at the numbers, the report indicated that the total loans provided by the fund reached approximately EGP 22,464,000. Beneficiaries also contributed around EGP 4,492,800, bringing the total investment to EGP 26,928,000. This demonstrates a great synergy in funding sources, maximizing their impact.

A standout finding in the report was that women topped the list of beneficiaries from the fund's projects. Their participation rate was an impressive 68.98%, with 923 female beneficiaries compared to 415 male beneficiaries. This clearly shows the state's success in supporting and economically empowering women, especially those who are primary caregivers, in line with directives from the political leadership.

The projects themselves were quite diverse, spanning productive, service, agricultural, and handicraft activities. This variety ensures that projects are well-suited to the unique nature and needs of each governorate, adding significant value to the local economy.

The Minister of Local Development and Environment emphasized that supporting small and micro-projects aligns perfectly with presidential directives. These directives aim to economically empower women and youth and foster sustainable local development, particularly in rural villages and towns.

Dr. Manal Awad also confirmed that the fund continues to welcome applications from citizens seeking project financing through local administrative units in the governorates. The fund provides necessary technical support and facilities, which helps boost family incomes and achieve broader economic inclusion.

Finally, the Minister noted that these ongoing efforts truly reflect the state's commitment to supporting the most vulnerable groups and strengthening women's role as essential partners in development, all in harmony with Egypt Vision 2030.
