Egypt's Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Engineer Raafat Hendy, recently met with Curtis Lindkvist, the President and CEO of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). This important meeting took place on the sidelines of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS Forum 2026) in Geneva, Switzerland, an event Egypt is proud to chair. They discussed ways to boost cooperation on several key priorities, including preparations for the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in 2026. A major focus was also on supporting the Universal Acceptance of domain names, which means making sure all languages and writing systems can be used online. This step is crucial for boosting digital inclusion and making digital services more accessible to everyone. Both sides also reviewed Egypt's growing role in supporting the Internet Governance Forum, both globally and regionally, showcasing its increasing influence in digital governance and shaping future internet policies. In another significant meeting, the Minister also connected with Amir Gelen, TikTok's Executive Director for Public Policy in the Middle East, Eurasia, and Africa. They explored opportunities for collaboration between Egypt's National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (NTRA) and TikTok. Key discussion points included protecting children online, enhancing capacity-building programs, and enriching cultural and scientific content, especially in vital STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. These meetings underscore Egypt's commitment at the WSIS Forum 2026 to expand its partnerships with international organizations and major tech companies. This strategic move aims to support Egypt's core priorities in digital governance, cybersecurity, and developing rich digital content.
