Dr. Amr Talaat, Egypt's Minister of Communications and Information Technology, emphasized the crucial need for a strategic plan to anticipate and tackle the dangers children face online. This plan is built on five main pillars, all aimed at protecting children in the digital space. He shared these insights during a hearing held by the House of Representatives' Communications Committee, which is currently working on drafting a law to regulate how children use social media apps and websites. The five key areas addressing digital risks include: * **Closed Digital Social Circles**: Here, children might form fake trust relationships with people online. These relationships can later be used to emotionally manipulate them, and the constant need for approval from these individuals can increase their control over the child. * **False Role Models**: Children can be exposed to individuals who promote incorrect or unethical behaviors. * **Dangerous Gaming Platforms**: These platforms present four main types of risks: * Voice or text interactions with older individuals, which can expose children to inappropriate content. * Violent or unsuitable content that doesn't align with children's ages or societal values. * Being lured into harmful actions through tempting challenges. * Digital addiction and spending too much money on in-game purchases. * **Targeted Algorithms**: These algorithms analyze how children use the internet to show them content that grabs their attention and encourages more interaction. This carries the risk of pushing children towards extreme content or reinforcing negative values and behaviors. * **Safety Standards and Family Supervision**: This involves working closely with the Ministry of Social Solidarity and the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood to teach families how to protect their children. It also means requiring platforms to have safe default settings for kids. * **Interactive Educational Content**: This pillar focuses on collaborating with the Ministry of Education to create learning materials that weave digital safety into school curricula and activities. Minister Talaat stressed the importance of finding a good balance: empowering children to enjoy the benefits of the internet while also shielding them from its dangers. He highlighted the goal of ensuring every child has the right to a healthy and secure digital environment where they can learn and play without their psychological and social well-being being compromised.
