Egypt Ramps Up Plans for Financial Hubs to Attract Global Investment

The Egyptian government is continuing its efforts to boost the country's standing as a regional hub for financial and investment services. It's doing this by speeding up the development of its financial and business environment and learning from leading international experiences in building specialized financial centers. In this context, Dr. Mohamed Farid Saleh, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade, discussed with officials from the British organization TheCityUK ways to cooperate on developing the regulatory and legislative framework for financial and professional activities. They also looked at supporting plans to create financial centers capable of attracting international institutions and boosting the competitiveness of the Egyptian market.

This discussion took place during a meeting the Minister held with TheCityUK officials as part of his official visit to London, the British capital. TheCityUK represents the financial and professional services sector in the United Kingdom and includes banks, asset managers, insurance companies, legal and accounting firms, and several specialized trade associations.

The Minister emphasized that developing the financial and professional services sector is a key pillar of the state's strategy to improve the investment climate. He noted that the government is working on preparing a modern and comprehensive framework aimed at increasing the competitiveness of this vital sector and enhancing its ability to attract international institutions. This effort supports Egypt's goal of becoming a regional hub for financial and investment services.

Modern Financial Centers

He explained that the success of modern financial centers doesn't just rely on infrastructure or geographical advantages. Instead, it's primarily based on clear regulatory and legislative frameworks, high-quality professional services, and an effective system for dispute resolution and commercial arbitration. The United Kingdom has advanced expertise in these areas, which Egypt can benefit from when shaping its own model.

Mohamed Farid pointed out that the British experience is considered one of the most prominent global models in developing financial and professional services. This makes the UK an important partner for exchanging expertise and building the institutional capabilities needed to support the Egyptian market's development in the coming phase.

For their part, TheCityUK officials reviewed the organization's role in supporting the financial and professional services sector in the UK. They stressed that clear regulatory frameworks and integrated professional services are essential elements for attracting global financial institutions and enhancing the international competitiveness of financial centers.

The organization's representatives clarified that the British experience can provide important practical expertise to support Egypt's ongoing development efforts, especially in areas related to financial legislation, legal and accounting services, and the institutional infrastructure that supports the business and finance sector.

The meeting also featured extensive discussions about future opportunities for joint cooperation. This includes exchanging technical and institutional expertise, coordinating with relevant British entities, and leveraging international best practices in developing the financial and professional services system related to business and financial law.

Both sides concluded the meeting by affirming continued communication and coordination in the upcoming phase to study mechanisms for technical and institutional cooperation. This will support the Egyptian state's efforts to develop its business environment, increase the attractiveness of the financial services sector, and enhance the Egyptian economy's ability to attract more international investments.
