Eugenia Kuyda, founder of Replika, a company specializing in interactive AI applications, has warned that the rapid pace of adopting AI technologies could lead to widespread social reactions if it causes a large number of job losses in a short period. These warnings come as global concern grows about AI's impact on the job market, with companies increasingly using smart models to automate tasks and boost operational efficiency.
The Risks Aren't Just Technical
Kuyda explained that the problem isn't the technology itself, but rather the speed of the changes happening in labor markets because of its spread. She added that quickly replacing human workers without clear alternatives or career transition paths could lead to society rejecting these new technologies, even with the productivity and economic gains they bring to companies.
The Corporate Race and the Need for an Organized Transition
This is happening alongside a wave of strong investments in the AI sector, as tech companies race to develop tools that can perform tasks previously done by humans. Estimates suggest that office, administrative, customer service, and even programming jobs are already being affected by the expanding use of generative AI. Kuyda emphasized the importance of managing this transition phase through professional retraining and skill development programs. She noted that AI's success won't just be measured by increased productivity, but also by economies' ability to absorb labor market changes without creating wide social gaps.
