Amid rapid regional efforts to integrate technology into the tourism sector, Egypt's experience in AI governance has emerged as a key model for discussion and exchange among member states of the D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation. This happened during an online technical workshop attended by government representatives and tourism stakeholders. This participation was part of a series of specialized meetings aimed at building capacity and strengthening cooperation among member states. It aligns with the outcomes of the Cairo Declaration, issued during the Fourth Ministerial Meeting of Tourism Ministers in May 2025, as countries move towards coordinating policies and exchanging expertise amidst rapid digital transformations. The workshop saw the attendance of several senior tourism officials who discussed how to use AI technologies to develop tourism services. They focused on improving the tourist experience and boosting operational efficiency, alongside exploring ways to unify visions among countries to enhance practical cooperation. Discussions also covered the challenges facing AI applications in tourism, notably the varying levels of digital readiness among member states and the need to connect regulatory frameworks with practical implementations, especially concerning support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operating in the sector. During the workshop, Egypt presented a series of specialized presentations highlighting best practices in using and governing AI within the tourism sector. They also showcased national efforts to integrate these technologies into tourism service systems, digital infrastructure, and supporting legislative and regulatory frameworks.
A Comprehensive Governance Framework
The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology focused its presentation on Egypt's AI governance framework. This framework includes guiding principles to ensure the development and use of reliable and responsible AI technologies, including generative AI applications, within a context that balances innovation with ethical considerations. The presentation also reviewed the national roadmap for governance for 2026. This roadmap includes launching an electronic version of a tool to assess the readiness of AI systems in both government and private sectors, preparing guidelines for protecting children when using these technologies, setting standards for selecting and purchasing systems, and establishing a specialized lab for auditing responsible AI applications. The workshop concluded with a set of recommendations that emphasized the need to establish ethical guidelines for using AI in tourism, ensure data security and protection, and promote principles of fairness and transparency in service delivery. It also highlighted efforts to mitigate any potential biases in pricing or service arrangement across digital platforms. The recommendations also stressed the importance of strengthening partnerships between the public and private sectors to develop innovative solutions, implementing specialized training and human capacity-building programs, and encouraging the creation of experimental environments to safely test AI applications before widespread deployment.Related editorial
