Egypt's Telecom Regulator to Launch Special SIM Card for Kids' Digital Safety

Mohamed Shamroukh, the head of Egypt's National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA), has announced that the authority is preparing to introduce a special mobile SIM card for children very soon. This initiative is part of a broader effort to regulate how young people use mobile phones and to give parents better tools for supervision. Shamroukh explained this during a meeting of the Communications and Information Technology Committee at the Egyptian House of Representatives, led by Ahmed Badawy. The committee was discussing a proposed law to regulate how children use social media platforms. He mentioned that the new SIM card is currently undergoing technical setup and testing, in collaboration with the four telecom companies operating in the Egyptian market. Shamroukh also noted that the commercial launch of the SIM card is just around the corner, emphasizing that it will be widely available to ensure all targeted children can access it. Raafat Hendy further clarified that the SIM card will be launched within 60 days. He stressed that parental supervision and monitoring are now absolutely essential, whether through these special SIM cards for children or through home internet services, especially with the huge increase in how much children use technology and social media platforms. This move highlights Egypt's commitment to combining tech solutions with smart monitoring to create a safe digital space for children, while also giving parents practical tools to effectively control and keep an eye on their kids' technology use.
