The Ministerial Group for Entrepreneurship announced that it has received 30 applications from companies seeking the Startup ID through the SME Development Authority. This incredible response came in less than 48 hours after the launch of the "Startup Charter," which is the first of its kind in Egypt. The charter offers two ways to apply for the Startup ID: a fast track that takes just 5 days for companies recommended by accredited entities like venture capital funds, business incubators, and accelerators; and a general track that takes two weeks and is open to all companies that meet the classification criteria. Startups can apply through the website: https://startup.gov.eg/ In this context, Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning and Economic Development and International Cooperation, and head of the Ministerial Group for Entrepreneurship, emphasized that the huge interest from companies in getting the Startup ID truly reflects how effective the charter's benefits are. She confirmed that the discussions held last year have indeed led to initiatives that meet the needs and aspirations of startups. Dr. Al-Mashat added that the Startup ID allows companies to benefit from legislative and tax advantages. These include dealing with special tax offices dedicated to startups to speed up services and improve communication, as well as easier procedures at labor offices and a general simplification of investment processes. The charter defines a startup as a newly established company characterized by rapid growth, flexibility, and innovation, aiming to introduce or develop an innovative product, service, or business model. This definition includes 6 main criteria: it must be innovative, have a legal structure that allows for investment, be established less than 7 years ago, have rapid growth opportunities, rely on technology or intellectual property, and work to solve a clear market problem. The Startup ID is valid for three years and can be renewed every two years until the company reaches 7 years from its establishment date, before it moves into the expansion phase. On his part, Basil Rahmy, CEO of the SME Development Authority, explained that the adoption of a unified definition for startups came from collaboration with members of the Ministerial Group and relevant working teams, and through a community dialogue that considered the unique characteristics of startups. The goal is to develop targeting mechanisms and design funding and non-funding programs to support Egyptian companies in their growth and expansion stages. Rahmy affirmed that the Authority's commitment to supporting Egyptian entrepreneurs was demonstrated by launching the first "Fund of Funds" in Egypt, specifically dedicated to investing in investment funds at different stages of startups. He pointed out that the companies that applied for the Startup ID operate in diverse sectors, including artificial intelligence, energy, education, manufacturing technology, financial technology (fintech), and e-commerce. This truly reflects the variety and attractiveness of Egypt's entrepreneurship environment.
