As part of the Egyptian government's rapid efforts to boost the competitiveness of its economy on the international stage, digital transformation and improving the investment environment have emerged as key topics. These were central to the economic dialogue held by a high-level Egyptian delegation in Washington, D.C., during the spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
Digital Transformation
The Egyptian government is working to reshape how it manages investment by increasingly relying on electronic platforms and developing the digital infrastructure for government services aimed at investors. This approach is part of a broader vision to reduce the time and procedures needed to establish and operate projects, while also enhancing transparency and ensuring equal opportunities in the market.
During a high-level roundtable organized by the “Middle East Future Lab” at the “Atlantic Council” in Washington, D.C., Dr. Mohamed Farid Saleh, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade, emphasized that the state is moving to accelerate digital transformation through integrated interactive platforms. These platforms will give investors direct and transparent access to data and investment opportunities, ultimately improving the efficiency of investment decision-making.
Structural Reforms to Reshape the Business Environment
The government's initiatives aren't just about digital aspects; they also include a comprehensive review of the system for establishing and operating projects and investment incentives. This aims to reduce operational costs and improve the overall business climate.
The Minister of Investment also revealed a plan to expand investment zones and industrial cities. A key focus is redirecting industry towards “comprehensive manufacturing” instead of just assembly operations. This strategy aims to deepen local content and increase the added value of Egyptian exports, thereby boosting their competitiveness in global markets.
Connecting Investment with Production and Technology
Within this framework, the state is working to link foreign direct investment (FDI) flows with increased production capabilities, while adopting advanced technological solutions, especially in TradeTech. This will help develop and enhance the efficiency of supply chains.
The Minister also highlighted the growing momentum in the public offerings program and the increasing role of Egypt's Sovereign Fund in building strategic partnerships with the private sector. This will improve the efficiency of managing public assets and make the Egyptian economy more attractive to investors.
On another note, Dr. Ahmed Rostom, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, discussed the state's efforts to support macroeconomic stability. This is being achieved through a mix of fiscal and monetary policies aimed at controlling inflation and fostering growth.
He explained that the Central Bank's initiation of a monetary easing cycle has helped alleviate inflationary pressures, despite regional challenges. He also noted that the government is simultaneously working to manage public debt and improve spending efficiency, while directing public investments towards priority sectors.
These policies, as presented during the session, reflect a clear direction towards enhancing the Egyptian economy's resilience against external shocks, whether from regional crises or global economic fluctuations.
The Minister of Planning also affirmed that legislative and economic reforms are continuing within the framework of Egypt Vision 2030. The goal is to achieve comprehensive and sustainable growth that directly improves the quality of life for citizens, while strengthening partnerships with the private sector as a key driver of development.
The roundtable saw significant engagement from economic experts and representatives of international institutions in Washington, D.C. They praised Egypt's proactive measures to strengthen its economic stability and transform it into a more flexible and sustainable model.
This participation is part of a series of intensive meetings held by the Egyptian delegation, aiming to boost international confidence in the economic reform path and support efforts to attract more foreign direct investment in the coming period.
