Converge Africa 2026: SEDFA Connects African Startups to Investment and Trade

The South African Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDFA) is stepping up its game to support the startup ecosystem. They're making a strategic move to connect these businesses with investment and trade networks across the continent, all thanks to their official partnership in the Converge Africa 2026 event. This move is part of a growing trend to help micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) integrate more deeply into the digital economy. It's not just about providing money; it's about giving them access to markets and helping them build strong partnerships within the digital trade world. SEDFA is participating as the official sponsor of the MSME Pavilion. This shows a shift in how they offer support, moving from old-school methods to more complete approaches. Their focus is now on creating real opportunities for expansion and growth, and boosting the competitiveness of startups in our fast-changing digital environment. Cape Town is set to host the event from May 4 to 6, 2026. It will bring together a wide range of leaders and experts from e-commerce, FinTech, payments, logistics, digital marketing, and cybersecurity. The event's theme perfectly captures the current focus: "Frictionless Digital Trade... Seamless Transactions Without Borders." This initiative comes at a time when MSMEs are becoming increasingly vital to the South African economy. They contribute over 60% of job opportunities and play a key role in the national GDP, even with ongoing challenges related to funding, market access, and digital integration levels. In this context, SEDFA believes that MSMEs, with their flexibility and capacity for innovation and expansion, will drive the next phase of digital economic growth in Africa. This belief is pushing the agency to increase its presence on continental platforms that bring together all parts of the digital trade ecosystem. Sponsoring the MSME Pavilion shows a strategic direction that places startups at the heart of economic development. They are seen as a main engine for creating jobs and sparking innovation. The focus is on building a complete environment that combines funding, mentorship, and technical training, alongside supporting their transition into the formal economy. The agency also has a range of programs designed to boost companies' readiness. These include supplier development initiatives, manufacturing support programs, rural empowerment projects, and entrepreneurship programs like "Empretec." All these efforts help companies integrate into regional and international value chains. Sifiso Ngcobo, SEDFA's Group Executive for Business Development Support, emphasized that making market access sustainable is a core part of the agency's strategy. He pointed out that building effective market connections is crucial for boosting exports and promoting inclusive economic growth. He added that Converge Africa 2026 offers a practical platform to open new doors for businesses. It provides direct interaction opportunities with investors and partners, which helps them compete better in a fast-paced and complex digital world.

10 Promising Startups

Through this partnership, SEDFA is giving 10 promising startups the chance to exhibit at the MSME Pavilion. These companies will get dedicated exhibition spaces, access to over 1,400 participants representing about 700 organizations, and direct networking opportunities with potential buyers and partners. Their participation also includes attending discussion sessions and workshops. This gives the startups a great platform to learn and engage with the latest trends in digital trade, FinTech, supply chains, and digital marketing. This whole initiative aims to build a real bridge connecting startups with the wider digital trade ecosystem. This opens up opportunities for growth and expansion and helps them benefit from the ongoing changes in African markets. Converge Africa stands out as a multi-faceted platform, covering payments, FinTech, e-commerce, logistics, digital marketing, and cybersecurity. This reflects the integrated approach needed for businesses to succeed in the digital economy. SEDFA believes that accessing this ecosystem is no longer optional; it's a competitive necessity. The success of businesses now depends on their ability to integrate payment tools, improve marketing strategies, manage supply chains efficiently, and build trustworthy customer experiences. The benefits of this partnership aren't just for the participating companies. It also boosts SEDFA's institutional presence through marketing and direct interaction at the event, solidifying its position as a key enabler of entrepreneurship in Africa. The participation of these ten companies is expected to create practical success stories. These stories will highlight the impact of such partnerships and support the agency's goal of building a development narrative focused on empowering small businesses and connecting them with real growth opportunities. In this regard, Nthabeleng Mokitimi-Dlamini, SEDFA's Executive Director for Business Ecosystem and Stakeholder Management, confirmed that the agency is working to strengthen its role as a central player in developing small enterprises. They do this by offering integrated solutions that combine funding, technical support, and partnership building.

The Digital Economy

She noted that the digital economy is one of the most significant growth drivers for the coming period. Platforms like Converge Africa offer strategic opportunities to connect with industry leaders globally, bringing long-term benefits to small enterprises. This partnership reflects a broader trend towards reshaping Africa's digital economy map. The goal is to ensure opportunities aren't just for big corporations but also extend to a new generation of startups ready to lead growth in the coming years.
