Kexin Huang, a former researcher in Leskovec's lab who recently earned his PhD, shared that Biomni can understand really complex questions like: "Why do these patients respond differently to treatment?" and then it gets to work on the bulk of the scientific tasks needed to find the answer. The researchers even showed a practical example where a scientist used Biomni to analyze over 450 files containing data on blood sugar levels, diet, and physical activity. In just about 40 minutes, the system managed to clean and standardize the data, create graphs, and uncover patterns linking food intake to body temperature. This is a task that researchers estimated would have taken more than 60 hours of human effort! Plus, Biomni is great at documenting all its steps and providing the scientific references it used. This really boosts research accuracy and makes it easier to replicate and verify results. Biomni was specifically trained on biomedical sciences, drawing from millions of publicly available research papers, code, and databases. It also uses over 150 specialized tools, 105 software packages, and 59 databases covering 25 different subfields, including genetics and neuroscience. The research team believes that the biggest hurdle for researchers isn't a lack of brilliant ideas, but rather the sheer time and effort needed for routine tasks like reviewing studies, analyzing data, and writing code. These are exactly the kinds of tasks Biomni can zip through in minutes. The researchers made it clear that Biomni isn't here to replace scientists. Instead, it's designed to help them focus on the truly creative scientific thinking and decision-making, while the system handles all those time-consuming executive tasks. The early version of Biomni is already being used in over 10,000 academic and industrial labs, making it one of the most widely adopted AI-powered "co-scientist" systems in the biomedical field.
