With e-commerce spreading quickly across Egypt, updating the laws that govern our digital world has become one of the most urgent tasks for Parliament. This is especially true given the clear shifts in how Egyptians are behaving online. MP Ahmed Badawy, who heads the Communications and Information Technology Committee in the House of Representatives, announced that amendments to the Information Technology Law—often called the “Combating Information Technology Crimes” law—will be sent to Parliament within two weeks. This move directly responds to the huge increase in digital service use and the new types of cybercrimes that have emerged. This legislative action comes at a time when data shows that about 68% of Egyptians now rely on online shopping. This highlights the growing digital economy, but it also brings increasing challenges related to protecting users and keeping electronic transactions safe from fraud and exploitation.
